This section looks at parents’ experiences in the early days following diagnosis of a mental handicap in a child. It also examines the issues surrounding the prevention of mental handicap and the choices that parents face. These are extremely sensitive issues and you are not asked to consider the rights and wrongs of these cases. The important aspects to bear in mind are the feelings of parents, the vulnerability of the child, and the decision-making processes involved.
