Nuclear Test Moratoria, Test Bans and the Non-proliferation Treaty

  • Gerald W. Johnson
Part of the Studies in Disarmament and Conflicts book series (SDC)

This chapter is based mostly on the author’s personal experiences. As a member of the staff of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory he was responsible for the conduct of its nuclear weapons testing in the 1950s when US testing occurred mostly in the atmosphere, and with few exceptions, to the Pacific Ocean Area and Nevada. For the last two Nevada test series in 1957 and 1958, just prior to the test moratorium (1958–61) he had overall responsibility for US nuclear weapons testing in Nevada.
