Abstract
Since galanin was discovered (Tatemoto et al., 1983) and was found to be widely distributed throughout the central nervous system (Skofitsch and Jacobowitz, 1985a; Melander et al., 1986a) and to coexist with other classical transmitters and peptides in different combinations (Melander et al., 1986b), the idea has been put forward that this peptide could act as a neural modulator (see Melander, 1986; Rokaeus, 1987). In fact, many studies have now demonstrated a variety of effects of galanin on neurons, smooth muscle and endocrine cells (see Rokaeus, 1987 and this Volume).
