On the solution structure of galanin

  • Chapter
Book cover Galanin

Abstract

Galanin belongs to a group of biologically active peptides with C-amidated endgroups which have been discovered by Victor Mutt and his collaborators (Mutt, 1986). Originally isolated from porcine intestine (Tatemoto et al., 1983) it has been found to occur also in the brain and spinal cord (Melander et al., 1986) as well as in and other tissues (Rökaeus, 1987). Amongst a variety of biological activities including the stimulation and inhibition of the release of various tissue hormones its possible function as neurotransmitter has been discussed. There are indications that e.g. the inhibition of insulin release results from the action of galanin on potassium channels and indirectly on calcium channels in the β-cells of the pancreas (de Weille et al. 1988, Dunne al. 1989, Nilsson et al. 1989).
