Abstract
Although I have so far concentrated on more overtly political issues, many would argue that the root cause of the political crisis in contemporary Africa lies in its economic failure, that is in the widespread crisis of production.1 There is no doubt that the present economic condition of Africa taken as a whole is not cheering. There seem to be today more frequent cases of more severe famines than there were ten or thirty years ago. All the economic indicators, from debt to growth, are poor, if not downright alarming.
