Abstract

On July 14 two hundred years ago the Paris mob stormed the Bastille. That same evening the Duc de la Rochefoucauld-Liancourt made an important conceptual distinction. Mais c’est une revolte’, said Louis XVI. Non, sire, ce n’est pas une revolte’, replied the Duc, ‘c’est une revolution’.
