Ethnography, History and Collective Representations: Studying Vendetta in Crete

  • Julie Makris
Part of the St Antony’s / Macmillan Series book series

In his novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Gabriel Garcia Marquez accompanies his reader through the world one would be likely to meet when investigating an honour-killing years after the event: the variety of versions, the unanswerable questions, the questionable motives, the uncanny coincidences and, above all, the repercussions one must attempt to make sense of. Such were the circumstances I encountered when studying a series of reciprocal killings known as vendetta or feud.
