Abstract

Hydrogen chloride is a colourless gas with a pungent, choking smell. It gives steamy fumes in moist air and is very soluble in water, forming hydrochloric acid. This is a strong acid (see Section 11.4 and also Example 16.1 and Question 16.1). Hydrogen chloride is manufactured by burning hydrogen in chlorine. H2(g) + Cl2(g)→2HCl(g) Concentrated hydrochloric acid is easily oxidised to chlorine, e.g. by manganese(IV) oxide.
