Abstract

This section presents a series of nursing care plans based upon Orem’s model of nursing. Preparing care plans is an essential aspect of current nursing practice, and using a nursing model can pose special challenges. While Orem has given direction regarding the way in which nursing and patient care can develop, she has left it to the individual nurse to determine how to adopt and work with the model. This suggests that there is no single ‘correct’ method of setting out a plan based upon Orem’s model. Instead, the nurse must take Orem’s ideas and use them in whatever way is appropriate to develop a plan of care that will meet each patient’s needs.
