Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is caused by a human retrovirus termed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV infection is now recognized worldwide and represents a major public health problem. Antibodies raised against HIV in a patient’s serum provide the most common methods of determination of HIV exposure. Concern regarding the accuracy and the proper use of serologic tests for HIV antibodies in serum has been alleviated by data that have shown a variety of serologic tests to now be accurate , and useful both as diagnostic tools , and as research tools .
