Anxiety and Cognition

Within cognitive neuroscience, problems can be discussed at various levels of analysis (Churchland and Sejnowski, 1988). The contributors to this volume illustrate the levels that can be used to discuss the mechanisms involved in anxiety. A majority approach the study of anxiety from a relatively low level, focusing on the neurochemical mechanisms underlying drug effects on anxiety. In contrast, the focus of this chapter is on the higher (cognitive) levels.
