Growth of Tourism: Can the Environment Cope?

  • Edward McMillan Scott

Abstract

Europe enjoys 60 per cent of the world’s international tourism. The tourism sector is of upmost importance to the facilitation of the single market and the image which the European Community (EC) is striving to uphold. Competition from the East and West is causing an impact on tourism and it is no wonder that Nikos Skoulas, then Greek tourism minister, presiding over the first-ever formal meeting of tourism ministers in December 1988 described tourism as the ‘stepchild of the Community’. The time has come to give Community tourism a distinctive image.
