Abstract

Public interest in, and concern for, the countryside is greater now than at any time in our history. The 1980s witnessed an unprecedented focus of attention upon the quality of our environment and conservation in general, and upon the future of the countryside in particular. The ‘greening of politics’, with environmental issues becoming an increasingly important part of the rural debate, have been widely discussed. The future of the rural economy is a complex issue involving a range of economic strategies, notably the effects of the Common Agricultural Policy. It also embraces policies relating to the future of development, forestry, watershed management, and conservation of our natural resources.
