Abstract
I have learned over the years that it is impossible to say anything about our industry without incurring the wrath of some sections of it. It is my experience that lasting equanimity, which we all want, is only built on constant debate and vigilance. If the industry should ever cease to have its dissenters, I would recommend that all of us are given tests similar to those handed out to athletes at the Olympics, to ascertain who is administering what to whom. In the following pages, I shall describe the forces for change in British coal, as I see it, and what impact these changes may have on our industry.
