Abstract

Since a peasant family (or household) was the basic unit of production in agriculture and the rural economy in pre-modern Jiangnan and the major labour force in the family consists of a man and a woman, we will first make a close study of the problem of labour productivity of each and then discuss the problem of labour productivity of the family as a whole. Before this we will discuss labour productivity in general in pre-modern Jiangnan.
