Abstract

The major changes that have taken place in nursing have been part of a turbulent National Health Service. The experiences we recount in Part Two cannot really be understood outside that context. The essential argument of this chapter is that the task of managing, leading and supporting nurses at every level in the Service has grown more demanding, just at the point when substantial changes were taking place in the organisation of those who were to undertake these tasks.
