Abstract
On the cover of IISS publications, we explain that the HSS was founded in the United Kingdom in 1958 to study the growing complexity of security in the nuclear age. It soon became clear that this could not be done from a national perspective, and since 1964 the Institute has been fully international. We state that we seek to inject new thinking into the ‘analysis of the complexities of international security and conflict’. By and large, as this celebration of our thirtieth anniversary indicates, we have done well. But how will we do over the next thirty years? We can gain perspective on the future if we are aware of the twists in the past path of strategic studies.
