Abstract

Those who have written for this book have done so because we felt able to make tribute to Bill in this way, and could write about topics that related to his concerns. We all knew Bill well in different ways and in different periods of his life in Sydney. But so did many others. This attempt at relating his life through our contact with him is by no means definitive. Bill was a strong and passionate person who provoked strong reactions in others. I most of all should declare my position and personal motivation in producing this book and in writing this account: Bill was the person closest to me for a number of years. Others, less close to him, would tell the story differently.
