The Protection Racket: Ordering the Public on the Streets

Abstract

‘The public’ looks, sounds and feels very different if you are speaking about public access to the media rather than if you are talking about access to the public streets. It is one thing to assert yourself as an outraged member of the public, denied your rights to free speech by media monopolies; and it is another thing to stand outrageously alone at a bus stop at night waiting for public transport. Whether you occupy the position of outraged member of the public or of an outrage to the public depends on who you are, on how you look and speak, and on what you know your place to be.
