Abstract

Because of the protracted war of liberation in the country there have been severe problems in estimating the ethnic populations. The war caused major dislocations of populations with large numbers of people fleeing to neighboring countries, and the Portuguese, since they did not control many areas in the country, were unable to carry out a complete census in 1970 as they did in their other African colonies. Our estimates are based on 1950 partial data and the observations in Jeune Afrique’s African Atlas, and may vary from other estimates.
