Abstract
The Gabonese ethnic groups are clustered at a fairly low level of abstraction. All have essentially similar levels of socio-economic development. The major cultural variation is that the southern groups are transitional between the patrilineal belt to the north and the matrilineal belt of the Congo region. Each of the ethnic clusters is locally recognized as an identity group to some extent. In addition to the major units, there are smaller populations of Bakèlè (4 percent), Okandé (4 percent: Baptindji, Mitsogo, Pové, Bassimba, Okandé, Baveya), Séké (4 percent: Séké and Benga), and Pygmies. In 1975 it was estimated that there were 20,000 Frenchmen in Gabon.
