Abstract

Like “First Confession”, this tale of a “Mother’s Boy”, choosing for the first time between his devoted mother and a lovely woman his own age, shows O’Connor hard at work, for its final version was the result of more than twenty years of revision. We possess the following versions:

  • “Night of Stars”, unpublished radio script, 5pp. TS., labelled FIRST DRAFT ONLY.

  • “Night of Stars”, unpublished radio script, 11pp. TS., signed “F. O’Connor”, dated 30/12/41.

  • “Night of Stars”, published script, The Bell, March 1942.

  • “The Rivals”, New Yorker, 26 October 1946.

  • “Judas”, in The Common Chord, 1948.

  • “Judas”, in More Stories, 1954 (duplicated in Stories by Frank OConnor, 1956).

  • “Judas”, in Collection Two, 1964 (duplicated in Collected Stories, 1981).
