Abstract

There are marked social class gradients in death rates from a wide range of medical conditions in the UK. It is reported [1] that in 65 of 78 disease categories, standardised mortality ratios (SMR) for men in the lowest social classes IV and V were higher than for either classes I or II. For women, 62 of the 82 categories showed a similar gradient in death rates.
