In a court of law, a prisoner is judged to be either guilty or innocent. There is no room for uncertainty. Medically, a human body is either dead or alive (although this is hotly debated on occasions). There are very few examples in real life where a simple division can be made between two extremes. Speaking French, for example, is not just something which you can or cannot do. Some people can speak fluent French, others a little French, and others none at all. Playing a musical instrument is another skill with a variety of levels.
