Small-scale Industry in Rural Areas: the Italian Experience

Abstract

In Italy, as in other countries, the beginning of modern industry was largely based on small firms operating in rural areas or ‘putting out’ work to rural dwellers. A comprehensive account of Italian experiences with ‘small-scale industrialisation in rural areas’ would have therefore to start from a remote past, and would be too large a subject for the present paper.
