Abstract

It is a fallacy to believe that professional health workers have the monopoly on care; indeed, they merely represent the tip of the iceberg. An infinitely greater amount of ‘nursing’ is done by a silent army of lay carers, who support a chronically dependent relative with unswerving dedication.
