Abstract
The political economy of health and welfare is at the centre of a number of separate but related controversies, ranging across the spectrum from academic analysis of the causes of historical mortality differences to political arguments on the funding and efficacy of the NHS. This book is an attempt to explore some of them and their connections. This introduction sets the scene, reviews the papers and discusses briefly some more salient of the topics. Inevitably, many important and relevant topics could not be covered at the conference where the papers were presented.
