Abstract

The replacement of diseased heart valves with prosthetic devices became possible with the development of methods for cardiopulmonary bypass in the late 1950s. The first ball and cage mechanical valve was implanted in 1960 (Starr and Edwards, 1961) and the first tissue valve in 1962 (Ross, 1962). During 1984, the last year for which there is complete data, 4935 open heart procedures were carried out for valve surgery and a similar number of mechanical and tissue valves were implanted.
