Abstract

The reaction to the action of a force F(t) on a system consisting of mass M which is suspended on a spring with the constant of elasticity E which is damped by a friction R can be described by the following equation of motion:

which indicates that in an undamped system (R = 0) the resonant frequency depends on the relationship between the elasticity and the mass and is reduced by the presence of damping due to friction. It has been known for some time that the undamped oscillation of a mass-spring system can be used to estimate the mass. Recently this principle has been used to measure mass under conditions of weightlessness.
