Abstract

In January 1985, the New England Journal of Medicine published the second negative study by Mayo Clinic researchers of the effectiveness of vitamin C as a cancer treatment. Once again, the media descended on the beleaguered Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine. Three months later, Dr Linus Pauling dispatched a registered letter to the editor of the Journal accusing him of publishing a ‘fraudulent’ paper and of being involved in a ‘conspiracy to suppress the truth’.
