Abstract
Leisure activities have been one of the major areas of growth in all European societies in recent years. Television means that many people are now able to watch international sporting events, such as the Decathlon described in the first passage. The pre-eminence of the GDR in many sporting events is astonishing for such a relatively small country. One such sport is bobsleighing, and the second passage describes how the GDR team won the world championships in 1985. But interest in sport is not limited to watching others perform, and the third reading passage looks at the growth in popularity of walking tours in the Federal Republic.
