The Security of the Northern Flank: A Danish View

  • B. Fr. Lindhardt

Abstract

Danish opinions about security in the Northern Flank area are very much influenced by Danish perceptions of the role and position of Denmark in geographical and foreign and domestic as well as internal political contexts. Denmark’s geographical position as the pivotal link between SACLANT’s main area of concern in the Norwegian Sea and the far North on one hand, and the Central Region (where the focus is concentrated on the North German Plain), on the other, presents the Danes with a Janus-like situation: they have to face two very different scenarios — the maritime — air environment in the SACLANT context, and the land-air environment of SACEUR’s area of responsibility. Denmark — and BALTAP (Baltic Approaches, in the NATO acronym) — is of vital importance to both these major NATO Commanders.
