Abstract

In the study of any abstract mathematical system, of fundamental importance are the mappings which preserve the structure which is the focus of attention in the system. In the case of vector spaces this structure is the addition and the scalar multiplication, and the resulting mappings turn out to be intimately related to matrices. Consequently, a deeper understanding of matrices and important matrix questions results from their examination.
