Abstract

This book aims to provide a comprehensive guide to users of mortality statistics and various sources of morbidity statistics (on abortion, cancer registration, congenital malformation notification, hospital in-patients, morbidity treated in general practice, notification of infectious disease, sickness absence and indicators of morbidity from surveys). These are dealt with in the nine chapters that follow. The final chapter then considers some multi-topic issues, and the appropriate balance between routine data collection and use of surveys. This span does not cover statistics on (1) staffing, (2) facilities (hospital beds, clinics, major equipment inventories) or (3) costs of health care. These are very different sets of statistics, generally of interest to a different group from those concerned with studying mortality or morbidity; they are therefore considered inappropriate to include in the present work.
