Abstract

Although by the time they enter school most children will have developed a firm preference for, and use of, one hand (usually the right), for a small number of children their preferred hand will not be readily apparent. This group will almost certainly contain some ‘true’ left-handers and in order to establish clearly a child’s handedness you should consult the Unit LATERALITY. You should be aware, however, that even apparently strong left-handers may not be left ‘dominant’ for all activities, i.e. they may be ‘right-footed’ and/or ‘right-eyed’.
