The Rise of the Company Legal Department

  • Karl J. Mackie

There is no statutory requirement on companies to employ an in-house lawyer as such1 nor to maintain a legal department of any size. So there is no official starting date for this institution, nor an official history. The in-house lawyer ‘just growed’. A company can choose to rely entirely on external legal advice, and many of course do. The rise of the in-house lawyer represents, therefore, a product of business decisions on the means by which companies should obtain legal services.
