Ory was a very suspicious character

Abstract

I recommended Lloyd Glenn to Ory and he joined us later in 1949. I think they may have had some other piano players in there before Lloyd came along. How I come to know Lloyd was because he used to rehearse and play out at a nightclub called the Hawaiian Village right next door to my cousins shoe shop on Western Avenue. Just to keep in touch with the shoemaking trade, I would go in and help my cousin to repair shoes or take care of his joint sometimes. I heard Lloyd and his band play and right away I seen he had possibilities: he could be converted to playing dixieland. Lloyd worked out pretty good and he stayed with our band a few years. He had a sort of hit record called Sh-boom which was a beautiful tune, and he wrote several other things. He had been with Barney Bigard’s cousin Don Albert down in San Antonio, Texas. That’s where Lloyd is from.
