Abstract

My description of Barbara Pym as ‘the Jane Austen de nos jours’ has been widely quoted, and I have been asked to elaborate on that theme. To deal with it fully is a job beyond me, and I have no wish to pose as a literary critic. So I propose to concentrate on one main aspect of their work: their relation to the society of their times, and their rendering of each.
