Abstract
It used to be said of Raphael’s paintings that they impress the viewer less at first in order to strike him more and more later on. Something of the kind is certainly true of a particular kind of art which may be as sublime as Raphael’s, or much more simple and homely. Such art has clarity, joyfulness, absoluteness of being — a complete air of simplicity above all, which, as in the case of Raphael’s paintings or Pushkin’s poems, makes the achievement seem as effortless as it is open and uncomplicated.
