Abstract
The security policy of Portugal was determined during the last century by the necessity of maintaining the African empire. This was the main reason for Portugal’s participation in the First World War and, to some extent, it also explains the evolution of the Portuguese position during the Second World War, and its decision to participate in NATO in 1949.
