Abstract

The first part of Chapter 3 looked at the way in which the play is built upon a number of oppositions or antitheses, darkness and light, black and white, devil and angel, Turk and Christian. When we look at the technical features of the play we are looking at the means by which the themes and issues are presented and articulated. A major technique which we find in Shakespeare’s work as a whole is juxtaposition, or setting one thing against another for purposes of contrast, comparison or connection. Juxtaposition may be of various kinds.
