Abstract

It is important to remember that Shakespeare wrote plays; not poems to be read silently in the study, nor passages to be prepared for examinations, but plays to be acted, to he heard, to be spoken or shouted or whispered to noisy audiences, whose cracking of nuts must have been as infuriating as today’s rustling of chocolate wrappers.
