Talking about your family and asking other people about their families is an important part of everyday conversation. The family tree (Stammbaum) of Karl Schmidt, below, introduces you to the German for some of the members of the family. Perhaps not everyone is lucky enough to have such a wealth of relations, and the second text gives one solution to the problem of mothers who have to go out to work to help the family budget. If they need help in finding someone to look after their families, a scheme such as the Osnabrück Tagesfamilien could be of help. In the third passage a German girl writes to her English pen-friend about growing up in the family home in Munich.
