Abstract

The Soviet Navy or VMF (Voyenno-Morskoy Flot) had 62 first-line SSBNs in 1984 consisting of 24 Yankee (or Y) I and II units, 36 Delta (or D) I, II and III units, and 2 Typhoons, the first boats of a new series.1 The lead ships of each class appeared in 1967, 1972, and 1980 respectively. It is unclear whether Typhoon is yet fully operational since the development programme of its on-board missile has been uncharacteristically slow.2 Production of the D-III continues, but it is expected to cease soon.3 Production of the Typhoon should continue at least through the decade, with 10–12 being the only estimate found of eventual class size.4
