Summary
The four chemicals, BZD, DAT, DAB and Sample A of CDA, were assayed for their ability to induce mitotic gene conversion in stationary phase cultures of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain JD1. The assays were performed in the presence of four different S9s and also in the absence of any exogenous activation. The four S9s used were mouse, chicken, uninduced rat and Aroclor-induced rat each with different levels of specific enzyme activity (Hubbard and Brooks, this volume).
Of the four test chemicals only BZD and DAT showed any consistent ability to induce mitotic gene conversion. BZD would only do this in the presence of uninduced rat or Aroclor-induced rat S9 at both loci, although there did appear to be some activity in the presence of mouse S9. DAT induced mitotic gene conversion only in the absence of any exogenous activating system.
CDA did show some indications of activity but they were not consistently reproducible.
DAB did not induce mitotic gene conversion under any of the conditions tested.
