Summary

The vertebrate retina is composed of horizontal and vertical layers that perform the tasks of visual signal perception, transformation and processing. Disk-shedding and autophagy (av) in photoreceptors follow endogenous circadian rhythms that are primarily driven by local components within the eye. Pharmacological manipulation has been used as a tool to study mechanisms of retinal rhythm regulation. Chronic clorgyline (a monoamineoxidase inhibitor) dampens the daily peak of disk-shedding and autophagy, whereas chronic methamphetamine (a dopaminergic agonist) significantly dampens only the peak of disk-shedding. Neither drug acted on the rhythm timing. Acute application of these drugs and subsequent light-stimulation of both disk-shedding and av caused a significant increase of disk-shedding, whereas no av response occured. Possibly, the light stimulation was performed at a refractory phase within the circadian rhythm of av. Drug-response as well as light-response of retinal morphology may follow a circadian rhythm of sensitivity.
