Is Orwell’s 1984 upon us? The apparent answer is No. For in Orwell’s world, a conference such as produced this volume could not have taken place. Papers could not be written for presentation, because the possession of writing implements was forbidden. A gathering of people for the purpose of exchanging views and opinions was prohibited. Moreover, and most basic, it was prohibited to have views and opinions, to the point that a person who had an opinion often was killed to eradicate his thought.
