Abstract
Local records show that all four grandparents of Antonin Besse were of French nationality and Catholic faith. Pierre Besse, his father, was born in Carcassonne on 10 March 1839, son of Joseph Besse and of Jeanne, nee Pommier. In due course he married Marie Bonnafous and became the father of four boys and three girls — Antonin, born on 26 June 1877, being the third son and fourth child. In the early eighties Pierre Besse’s health began to fail, and he moved with his family to Montpellier where he hoped to get better medical attention. He died in 1884, when Antonin was seven. His widow stayed on in Montpellier, which, rather than Carcassonne, for the younger children at any rate, came to be the family home.
