Abstract
The middle thirties were profitable years for the firm of Besse. Davis’s repeated visits to the United States had resulted in good connections with important American tanners and glove makers: very substantial orders for skins were now coining in. There is a note from AB in late 1935 that a cargo of Polish sugar had been sold with good profit. A little later he was writing:
Thanks to our purchase of Russian Sugar we can sell it at such a rate as to prevent others making anything but a heavy loss, whilst we ourselves make a profit…. As regard X’s competition we have no alternative but to fight and fight and fight. Every time we hear of a sale we should warn the buyer that we mean to see to it that no profit for him results from the transaction. We did this a few years ago with Shell products, and the method proved effective.
