vacuum distillation. A DISTILLATION process that is carried out under reduced pressure in order to separate out more components than can be derived from ATMOSPHERIC DISTILLATION alone, using ATMOSPHERIC RESIDUE as feedstock. See also REFINING, PRIMARY PROCESSING.
